Quene_Berkeley 2022

Saskia Quene

I am a postdoctoral research scholar at UC Berkeley from March 2022 to February 2023. I completed my dissertation in art history on the use of gold leaf and perspectival modes of representation in late medieval Italian panel painting at the University of Basel, Switzerland. My first book, entitled “Goldgrund und Perspektive. Fra Angelico im Glanz des Quattrocento” (De Gruyter/Deutscher Kunstverlag) is forthcoming 2022. At Berkeley, I am working on my second book project on visualizations of time and eternity in manuscripts from the 9th and 10th centuries. I am curious to understand the different strategies artisans and scribes employed in musical and cosmological diagrams to visualize the fourth dimension on the two-dimensionally imagined surface of their parchments.
