    We will hold a memorial for recently deceased Professor Kenneth Weisinger on Monday, September 22nd, from 4-6 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Faculty Club.

    We lament the loss of our friend and colleague, Professor Kenneth Weisinger, who died Monday, July 28, after losing a long battle against cancer. He will be sorely missed. Widely respected as a colleague and loved as a teacher, Professor Weisinger taught at Berkeley since 1972, holding a joint appointment in Comparative Literature and German. He is best known for his work on Goethe, Hölderlin and Weimar Classicism, and was especially fond of teaching the history of the lyric. His stunning erudition in classical philology, literature and music as well as his genuine enthusiasm for teaching have been inspiring to all…

    During the 11th annual German Studies Conference, "Speaking Between: Language and Intersubjectivity", Keynote Speaker Mark Turner will give a talk called "Speech Blends." The talk will take place at 1 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Humanities, Stephens Hall 220.

    Each year the graduate students of the department organize and host a two-day conference on a specific interdisciplinary theme. The conference offers students and faculty from the U.S. and abroad an opportunity to present their research on such diverse topics as: “Finite Subjects: Mortality and Culture in Germany” (2002), ”Self-Made Germans: Authenticity, Authority and Self-Fashioning” (2001), “The German Soldier” (2000), “Reading Turn-of-the-Century Culture at the Turn of the Century” (1999), “Building Memory: City Space and Urban Experience” (1998), and “Conquering Women: Gender and War” (1997).
