elementary german workshop

Workshop description: This workshop combines the exhilaration of total immersion in a foreign language with a living experience in Germany’s capital of Berlin, offering unique opportunities for students to learn about and absorb German language, history, culture, and a world perspective. Carrying 5 credit units, this intensive course is designed to give students the opportunity to complete one full semester of college German at the beginners level. Utilizing a communicative-oriented approach, the workshop will help students to acquire a reasonable level of communicative competence in German while being sensitized to the relationship between language and culture. A thorough on-site orientation program, guided excursions and housing arrangements in Berlin will provide an invaluable cultural supplement to formal language instruction.

Instructor profile: Nikolaus Euba is Lecturer in German and Coordinator of the German Language Program at UC Berkeley and holds a M.A. degree in Deutsch als Fremdsprache from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He has taught and coordinated a broad variety of German courses at Miami University of Ohio and the University of South Carolina before coming to UC Berkeley, where he now mentors the Graduate Student Instructors who teach the elementary and intermediate level language courses. He served as an AP reader in the past summer and has been associate director of Miami University’s Intensive Summer program in Germany for five years.

Detailed information about projected program cost and housing arrangements will be released shortly
