"Von mir willst du den Weg erfahren?" "Ja", sagte ich, "da ich ihn selbst nicht finden kann." "Gib's auf, gib's auf", sagte er und wandte sich mit einem großen Schwunge ab, so wie Leute, die mit ihrem Lachen allein sein wollen.

PLACEMENT of our Recent P.h.D.s

The department has an outstanding placement record. In the ten-year period 1995-2005, all of the fifteen literature and culture Ph.D.s who applied nationally and/or internationally for positions were successful. Eleven of them accepted tenure-track (or, in the case of Harvard, long-term) positions at the following institutions: Brigham Young University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Southern Illinois University, Indiana University/Purdue University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ohio State University, University of Washington at Seattle, and Washington University in St. Louis (two appointments). Ph.D.s in Germanic linguistics between 1995-2001 have successfully applied for and accepted academic positions at the University of Bonn (Germany), Pennsylvania State University, San Francisco State University, Ohio State University, Florida Atlantic University, as well as theoretical linguistics positions in the high tech industry. The department is committed to helping students secure appointments in academia. This effort includes a workshop on all aspects of the academic job market early in each fall semester, reviewing of curriculum vitae and letters of application, mock interviews, and follow-up advising.
