BERKELEY READING LIST
German Literary Studies
Literature and Philosophy
A Note to our Doctoral Students:
The following lists represent faculty recommendations to help you prepare for the Qualifying Examination. You are not restricted to the works on this list, and are not required to read all of them. With the advice of the faculty, you compose your own list that is representative of all periods. You should discuss your selection with members of your Q.E. committee and must have it approved by the graduate adviser (see guidelines for the Qualifying Examination). We included titles from German intellectual history and philosophy because we believe in exploring the interrelations and crossovers among the various forms of cultural production. The list contains most classics of German literature, but also personal favorites of our faculty. We refrained from itemizing individual poems but instead point you to useful anthologies of lyrical poetry. Our Literature and Philosophy Reading List is a work in progress. Please look at it critically and draw on it selectively for your own list!
