INTENSIVE GERMAN COURSES IN THE SUMMER
Embark on an exciting summer journey - Learning German will open up astonishing new cultural vistas, enable you to communicate with 120 million people in several European countries, and expose you to the world of great thinkers such as Nietzsche, Kafka, and Freud. Among the multiple personal, academic, and professional benefits of a foreign language learning experience is the fact that graduate and law schools in the U.S. are keen on admitting students with advanced knowledge of a foreign language. In 2005, UC Berkeley offers a variety of German courses and intensive workshops on the Berkeley campus and a workshop for beginners in Berlin.
NEW GERMAN SUMMER COURSE OFFERED IN BERLIN:
German 1: Beginning German
NOT OFFERED IN SUMMER 2008
5 units, June 12- August 18. Projected Program Cost: $ 3,500 including tuition and fees, housing, and airfare. Up to six $ 500 scholarships available!
This workshop combines the total immersion in a foreign language with a living experience in Germany's capital of Berlin, offering unique opportunities for students to learn about and absorb German language, history, culture, and a world perspective. Carrying five credit units and taught by UC Berkeley faculty, this intensive course is designed to give students the opportunity to complete one full semester of college German at the beginners level. Utilizing a communicative-oriented approach, the workshop will help students to acquire a reasonable level of communicative competence in German while being sensitized to the relationship between language and culture. A thorough on-site orientation program and guided excursions in Berlin will provide an invaluable cultural supplement to formal language instruction.
Students will be integrated in the vibrant and diverse student life of the International Summer University at the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and have library priviledges, access to dining halls, cafeterias, and computer facilities. With their German student ID, participants can benefit from substantial discounts at many venues in Berlin; a public transportation pass provides unlimited access to the one of the world's most extensive and efficient public transportation systems. Housing will be in a FU dormitory (apartments with single bedrooms and shared kitchen and bathroom), conveniently located in the vicinity of both the FU Campus, where class will be held, and downtown Berlin.
